The Vivid Faces of Overweight Women Offer More Than Meets the Eye

CoD-Girl-2I am a photographer who likes the faces of my subjects to have character. I’m into the vivid face that expresses life as it is lived, not covered up with loads of makeup or prevented from happening by Botox injections. And, though I know that there are plenty of health reasons for people not to be over overweight I, for one, was gratified to read a new study published Monday that suggests that overweight older women may be less likely than their thinner peers to develop the potentially blinding eye disease glaucoma. Now, come on! I’m not the only one who thinks that overweight women should get some marks on the positive side of life.

Researchers found that the heavier women in the Dutch study were less likely to be diagnosed with so-called open-angle glaucoma. Since obesity would seem likely to boost pressure in the eye, these new findings may appear counter-intuitive. And, in fact, overweight and obese women in the study did have somewhat greater pressure within the eye — called intraocular pressure. But the researchers speculate that there may be something protective about extra fat tissue in women — like increased estrogen levels — that helps lower their risk of glaucoma.

So, let’s here it for another study that shoots day the “all or nothing” theory in life. Everybody has something about themselves to celebrate. And, I celebrate the vivid faces of well-fed women!
