Obama's Speech: Condemnation and Praise for Rev. Wright

Barack Obama is delivering his speech on race today, The transcript has already appeared on the Internet. Here are excerpts and my analysis.

The Transcript of the Speech that will be delivered by Barack Obama today has been released to the internet via the Drudgereport. In it Obama first condemns his own pastor for inflammatory rhetoric, but then later in the speech seems to excuse it, and praises the racist pastor. Obama now admits that he did know, and listened to many of Reverend Wrights Anti-American and Anti-white rants, but did nothing but silently disagree. At least that is his claim now that he is running for President and Wrights comments have become an issue. After Reading over this speech, which I will link to on this blog, I think it may inspire his supporters but those who are concerned about his association with Pastor Wright will not have their suspicions abated. Obama delivers a good sounding speech, but with all his speeches, including this one, it is full of borrowed platitudes and nothing new or substantive.

First Obama condemns Wrights racist and inflammatory statements.

I have already condemned, in unequivocal terms, the statements of Reverend Wright that have caused such controversy. For some, nagging questions remain. Did I know him to be an occasionally fierce critic of American domestic and foreign policy? Of course. Did I ever hear him make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in church? Yes. Did I strongly disagree with many of his political views? Absolutely – just as I’m sure many of you have heard remarks from your pastors, priests, or rabbis with which you strongly disagreed.

But the remarks that have caused this recent firestorm weren’t simply controversial. They weren’t simply a religious leader’s effort to speak out against perceived injustice. Instead, they expressed a profoundly distorted view of this country – a view that sees white racism as endemic, and that elevates what is wrong with America above all that we know is right with America; a view that sees the conflicts in the Middle East as rooted primarily in the actions of stalwart allies like Israel, instead of emanating from the perverse and hateful ideologies of radical Islam.

Then after condemning, Obama praises Rev. Wright:

And this helps explain, perhaps, my relationship with Reverend Wright. As imperfect as he may be, he has been like family to me. He strengthened my faith, officiated my wedding, and baptized my children. Not once in my conversations with him have I heard him talk about any ethnic group in derogatory terms, or treat whites with whom he interacted with anything but courtesy and respect. He contains within him the contradictions – the good and the bad – of the community that he has served diligently for so many years.

I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother – a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.

These people are a part of me. And they are a part of America, this country that I love.

Barack Obama should have yanked his family out of that church long ago. Who knows what poison his children have been exposed to through the years? It is people like the Reverend Wright who will keep the fire of racial devision burning hot, because they know it is in their own personal interest to keep the pot boiling at the expense of the next generation of African Americans.

One scary part of this is the fact that Oprah Winfrey also attends this church, and she is one of the most influential women in America. How much has Jeremiah (Fred Phelps) Wright influenced her?

some how people are able to make their own opinions, it seems that only the right-wing pundits have no way of separating their own opinions from those of their demi-gods

That is the point of an opinion blog, to express my opinions. Unlike the MSM I admit my biases, but anyone is welcome to counter any of my opinions.

I don't know how much your exposure is to other Christian denominations, so forgive me if I seem patronizing. In most mainline churches, there is a lot of dissensions within clergy opinions and that of the congregation membership. Attending a sermon doesn't imply agreement with the things said in the sermon. Rev. Wright seems to be a very inspiring speaker who goes off on crazy tangents once in a while. Obama was wrong not to voice his concerns with Rev. Wright about some of his inflammatory remarks the day there were said and that makes me wonder about his integrity, but I doubt he or Oprah Winfrey have been seriously affected by his outlandish statements.

It's kind of like attending the Westboro Baptist Church and saying some of what Fred Phelps says is inspiring, I just don't agree with the bigoted parts. I myself would be very uncomfortable attending a church that I had to pick and choose what parts to believe and which parts to discount.

It was a good speech, well delivered, polished. The only problems with it were the lies he expects us to swallow, and the idea that we'd want to unite behind the likes of him.

For a guy who made it on his own, he sure has contempt for anyone else that did.
